The First Week

We have had a great week together in first grade! We spent most of the first week getting to know each other, learning each other's names, and practicing our new classroom routines. We even had a fire drill on Friday!

The first graders in room C-7 are super readers and writers! They are also excited about our science unit on animals and have lots of good questions to research. But the most wonderful thing about Mrs. McHenry's class is how kind and helpful this group of students is. I am a lucky teacher!

First graders have writing homework this weekend. Since we have been talking about our names this week, students were asked to talk to a parent or grandparent to find out if they are named after someone in the family, if their name has a special meaning, or if they have a nickname they like to go by. Sit down with your child this weekend to talk about the name you chose for him or her. Why is it special?

Homework

First graders should read with someone at home for at least 15 minutes each night. When choosing a book to read at home, make sure there is no more than 1 "tricky" word per page. This will help your emerging reader develop confidence and a love of reading. In addition to math homework sent home in your child's homework folder, encourage your first grader to look for patterns, geometric shapes and symmetry in the world around you. Your first grader will also be learning games s/he can play at home with a parent, sibling, or friend.
